Name:
Reinhard Beneke

"I’ve got tons of LEGO bricks waiting for a really big idea!" says Reinhard, a mechanical engineer from Hardegsen in Germany.

In the meantime, he’s not short of regular-sized ideas. In fact he designed five models for the Hobby Train Box, including an unusual railbus – a cross between a streetcar and a train. A railbus is a train that runs on regular tracks and is used in rural areas where there are few passengers.

Reinhard is active in www.1000steine.de and has organized several events himself. He recalls the early ones where "everyone just improvised." He says it was a lot of fun: "We just dropped the tracks on the floor and started building trains to run on them."

These days exhibitions and events are not just about the trains. Landscapes are important too – Reinhard says they have to be "stylish" – and the events themselves have to keep getting better and better. Reinhard travels to them regularly and has been to LEGO World in the Netherlands as well as Brickfest in Oregon recently.

Reinhard likes to use his imagination all the time. "I think of a new design every day," he says. "And the best thing about LEGO trains is being able to build anything you want."

His LEGO bricks are competing with virtual designs these days. Reinhard has become something of a specialist at making 3D animations like trains traveling along the tracks with their pistons moving realistically and even a biplane doing a loop.
