How to build your own modular house

Modular building offers:
- Standardized dimensions and connection points
- Vertical and horizontal expansion possibilities
- Flexibility to join your creations with those of other LEGO fans or LEGO designers

You will need four 1x2 TECHNIC bricks, two TECHNIC friction pegs and one 32x32 or 16x32 stud base plate.

On the 32-stud side of a base plate count 9 studs and then place a 1x2 TECHNIC brick. Then count 10 studs and place a second 1x2 TECHNIC brick. There should then be 9 studs left to the edge of the plate (9+2+10+2+9=32).

* Market Street base module

Mirror that same placement of bricks on any other 32-stud side of a base plate and you have got the foundation of your modular house. Now anything you build within the dimensions of that base plate will connect with your friction pegs to any other module that you or your friends create.

Try to keep the façade or face of your buildings 7 to 9 studs back from the edge of the base plate. This allows room for a sidewalk and ensures that most buildings will be on the same plane.

Vertically, the sky’s the limit with modular building. The average height of a single story is around 9 bricks, but can go up or down a couple of bricks depending on the style of building. Just remember to make sure that the top of each floor is tiled so that you can add and remove sections as you’d like.

Don’t be afraid to try placing your top floor directly on your bottom level. It’s a great check to see if you’ve got full modularity.

How to build a Market Street module

To create additional floors to Market Street you should use 16x16 dimensions with a 4x4 hole in the middle of the floor for the staircase*. Feel free to make multiple fronts so that they can be turned and thereby create a new expression with each turn.

To get started you can download the individual Market Street modules in LXF format here: module 1 , module 2 , module 3 , module 4 , module 5 , and module 6 .

Please note that LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) v. 2 is required to download the modules. You can download the latest version of LDD here .
