Name:
James Mathis

European trains are James’ specialty. He started out at the age of three, when his father bought him a German model train set. Around age five he started playing with LEGO sets. But it was only when he was around 27 that he really became an AFOL. Seeing a picture of a German train, the Bayerische Oberlandbahn or BOB, he was fascinated and immediately set out to build a model of it.

"The amazing thing about BOB is that some of the cars have no wheels," says James. "They’re just connected to the two adjacent – wheeled – cars."

James has also built a model of the French TGV. "It’s bold, fast and I just love that orange color scheme," he explains. "It is so striking against landscapes in the countryside and in urban areas too".

Despite coming from Albuquerque in New Mexico, James has traveled on the real thing in France already, which he says was a fantastic experience. Back in 2002, he was proud to be invited by the LEGO Group to design a Santa Fe Super Chief passenger car. So his designs for the Hobby Train Box are not his first project of that kind. James’ six designs include an old-fashioned passenger car from the early 1900s and a modern electric locomotive.

James is also lucky that he has been able to visit LEGOLAND in Billund, where he got his LEGO driver’s license when he was only 11!
